Katie Slemp, a PhD candidate at the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics at York University, has been awarded the IGALA13 Best Student Paper Award in 2025 for her paper, “My bad. That’s a transwoman, and I’m going to end my life”: Repair following misgenderings during crowd work on TikTok. The paper was recognised for addressing an important issue in gender and language studies, while effectively synthesising multiple studies and theoretical perspectives.
The evaluation committee also highlighted the paper’s clear methodology, well-documented corpus collection, and thorough presentation of its findings and results. The award recognises the academic and social contribution of student research to the field of language, gender, and sexuality studies, as well as the promising future of emerging scholars in the field.

Dr. Lal Zimman has been named the winner of the Best Article Award for his article, “Trans Language Activism and Intersectional Coalitions,” published in the Journal of Sociolinguistics in 2024. The article was recognised for its timely and impactful contribution to trans linguistic activism, particularly in highlighting the importance of reflexivity around privilege, access, and language ideologies.
The reviewers also praised the article for its originality in emphasising the need for intersectional coalitions in relation to trans language activism. The award reflects the article’s relevance to the theme “Rethinking (G)local Genders, Sexualities, and Activisms” and its contribution to advancing discussions on gender and language justice.
